New York City Center provides special services to the many companies that perform here annually including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and American Ballet Theatre. City Center presents, co-presents, and commercially rents the Mainstage theater, and is the long-time home for Manhattan Theatre Club, with its full season of plays and "Spring Boards" series in City Center's Stage I and Stage II theaters.
The jewels in City Center's producing crown are the Encores! Great American Musicals in Concert series, introduced in 1994 and the Fall for Dance Festival, introduced in 2004, both to critical and audience acclaim.
Consistently attracting the best Broadway talent and discovering the stars of the future, Encores! has garnered a fistful of awards, including the 2000 Tony® Honor for Excellence in Theatre, the Lucille Lortel, and the Outer Critics Circle. When the 1996 Encores! production of Chicago (with Bebe Neuwirth, Ann Reinking, James Naughton) was remounted on Broadway it received six Tony awards, the most ever given to a musical revival.
The Fall for Dance Festival has been a favorite of fans and critics alike since its inception, with its $10 tickets and its eclectic mix of companies from across New York City, the U.S. and around the world. With everything from tap to tango, and ballet to hip-hop, Fall for Dance offers an exciting dance experience to new audiences every season.
Committed since its founding to being an educational resource for New York City, City Center has long offered students and teachers the opportunity to fully experience the arts while integrating them into classroom work. For over ten years, New York City Center's Young People's Dance Series has sent professional artists into public schools; brought their students into the Mainstage theater experience; and incorporated the creativity, discipline, and excitement of the music and movement into the schools' core curricula. This renowned effort, nationally recognized by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, has been expanded into workshops, musical theater components, and teacher education programs, and today reaches out to educate and enlighten both young and general audiences.
